Two men are dead after an altercation in rural Mingo County, according to sheriff's deputies.

It happened about 10 p.m. on Elk Creek Rd., near Rt. 65 north of Delbarton.

Deputies say a man was attacked with a hammer and left in the roadway near his home. When the victim's brother arrived and went inside the home, the suspect jumped in the unattended vehicle and ran over the victim in the roadway, killing him.

Deputies say first responders arrived at the scene a short time later and shot the suspect, who fled into the woods injured. Police caught up with the suspect shortly afterward, shooting and killing him.

The West Virginia State Police is handling the investigation, and declined to release details pending family notification of the two men killed.
