A 20-year-old Perry County man is behind bars and charged with murder after Kentucky State Police said he was driving impaired and caused a crash that killed someone.
“This morning at about 5:15 we received a call of a two vehicle accident in Bonnyman.,” said Public Affairs Officer Tony Watts of Kentucky State Police post 13 in Hazard.
Reports indicate that 20-year-old Eric J. Ison was driving under the influence when he hit another vehicle, killing a man from Lost Creek in Breathitt County.
KSP said it all began near Entertainment drive and the Fugate Cinemas. Ison was traveling southbound on 15 when he hit a guard rail, overcorrected, spun out of control and hit 68-year-old Bobby Napier who was traveling northbound on 15.
Napier was pronounced dead at the scene. Ison was taken to Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital where he was treated and released with minor injuries.
“At that time he was taken into custody by the state police and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, aggravated circumstances, second degree and murder and lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Detention Center,” said Watts.
Police say Ison failed all field sobriety tests, and has been charged with Driving Under the Influence in the past.
“He is charged with a second offense, he would be a repeat offender,” said Watts.
“We will be waiting on the toxicology to see what he was under the influence of.”
Ison declined an interview and Jail Tracker stated he is being held on a $2,000,000 bond.
