Kentucky had more mine deaths in 2011 than any other state

The number of coal miners killed on the job decreased in 2011, but Kentucky lead the nation in the number killed.

21 miners were killed in the U.S. last year, the second lowest number since the federal government began keeping record.

Eight of those miners died in Kentucky. West Virginia had the second most deaths with six.
