SUWANEE, Ga. (AP) - A police official in suburban Atlanta says SWAT officers had no choice but to take out a gunman who had been holding four firefighters for hours.
A fire official says the four hostages had cuts and bruises from explosions officers set off to distract before moving against the gunman. The injuries were minor. One SWAT team member was shot in the hand or arm but is expected to be fine.
Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter says the decision to take out the gunman was made because it was believed that the lives of the hostages were in "immediate danger." Earlier, a fifth firefighter was allowed to leave to move a fire truck.
The gunman, who has not been identified, demanded several utilities be restored. According to public records, the home is in foreclosure and has been bank-owned since mid-November.
