PERRY Co., Ky. (WYMT) - A groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of a new wastewater treatment plant.

Officials in Perry County say there is a tremendous amount of raw sewage going into the North Fork of the Kentucky river.

Officials say the Chavies Wastewater Treatment Plant will give access to communities in desperate need of clean water.

Mark Feibes is one of the project managers.

"I'm sure the highway department can tell you that when they go out they clean ditches that a lot of times are full of sewage. It's going to take that out of the ditches which ultimately drains to the streams and river," said Feibes.

Officials say construction is tentatively set to begin around late September and the facility should be completed in the fall of 2014.
