MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - A Martin County family was relieved when they located their stolen car but when they went to pick it up, it was not quite the same.
Tuesday afternoon, Donnie Stacy, headed home to his apartment where he knew his son was waiting on him.
Stacy says, "I came over here and walked in, I said 'he must not be here, his car is gone.' I walked into the bedroom and he was asleep. So I woke him up and said, 'Jason where's your car at?'"
Family members say by the time they realized the car had been stolen from outside their door at Dempsey Apartments, whoever stole the car had time to drive it to Howell's Recycling where it was sold for $240 and then crushed.
Stacy says his son made some calls and discovered it was at Howell's, they immediately went to the the scrap yard...thinking they had located it in time to get the black Pontiac Sunbird back in one piece.
"We walked all around looking...I said 'Jason they've already squashed it, because there's a tire and fender off of it,' and then he started crying," Stacy says.
All of this happened within just a couple of hours and it is a crime that Martin County Sheriff Garmon Preece says is becoming more common.
Preece says, "They want that two or three hundred dollars they get out of that vehicle, so they take your vehicle and have it crushed. Just observe and make sure you are careful about who your friends are."
Officials have not made any arrests in the case.
Sheriff Preece says they do have some people of interest and they are working to put the case together and present it to a grand jury.
