Reusing Water Bottles

If you were outside at all these past few days you probably noticed that the heat is back!

One of the best ways to stay cool is by drinking lots of water.

But reusing water bottles may not be so healthy.

In the heat of summer, Thanh Helton is working hard to keep the kids in her summer program hydrated.

She buys new water for the kids, but at home she reuses the plastic bottles.

“Personally, I recycle at home. I clean with Clorox and then refill with my filter at home,” Helton said.

Helton says she does toss the reused bottles after using them about 4 or 5 times.

Health officials we talked to do suggest cleaning bottles with about 2 teaspoons of unscented bleach and then rinsing them out thoroughly.

They say most water bottles are only designed for one use because their design makes it hard to get all bacteria out of them.

If you're going to reuse the bottles they suggest using more simply designed sports bottles.

Back out here in the heat we looked into a lot of the other rumors and myths we tend to here about water bottles.

State health officials told WYMT they really haven’t looked into those, but one U.S. Government Website says most of those are untrue.
