$27M grant to help prepare students for college

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky is getting a nearly $27 million
federal grant to help better prepare students for college.

The governor and state Council on Postsecondary Education
announced the six-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education
on Monday, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader
(http://bit.ly/r957o8).

The grant will be used for GEAR UP Kentucky, or Gaining Early
Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.

Starting in January, officials say the program will work with
about 30 schools and serve about 10,000 students beginning in the
seventh grade.

Participating schools will be announced later this month.
