Nurses Test For Diabetes, High Cholesterol In Children

Nurses are going from school to school, testing for high cholesterol and diabetes.

Students from three Perry County schools were screened Wednesday, including Dennis Wooten Elementary School.

This is the first year nurses with the After Hours Clinic tested school age children for these conditions.

"They don't think about cholesterol, diabetes or anything like that. Kids today, they eat a lot of junk food, they're in front of the television a lot, and video games. So you have more overweight children now," said Kristina Cornett, R.N.

Nurses say when caught early, diabetes and high cholesterol can be treated without medication.
