Sykes Enterprises Considering Reopening In Hazard

Nearly 500 jobs could be coming back to Eastern Kentucky.

In 2004, Sykes Enterprises decided to expand internationally and closed their Perry County location. Now the company is thinking about reopening in Hazard and at least one man hopes to get his old job back.

Donald Little worked at Sykes Enterprises as a maintenance worker until he was laid off two years ago.

"If I could go back I would. The people I worked with were fun people. We were family," said former Sykes employee Donald Little.

In 2004, nearly 500 people lost their jobs when Sykes closed its doors in Eastern Kentucky.

"The company’s strategy was to expand globally. It did that. There are businesses that are really best suited to remain in the U.S.," said David Binnie, Senior Director of Sykes Enterprise.

The company faced language barriers in foreign countries where they had to hire employees that could speak a combined 28 languages. After the struggle internationally, officials at Sykes say they are considering reopening the site in Hazard.

"They are coming back to evaluate. They have not made a decision, but they are looking at this community again," said Hazard Mayor Bill Gorman.

"It's a great area, great people. There's a history of the workforce being stable in the area," said Binnie.

And with a 10 million dollar building vacant in the Coal Fields Industrial Park, this location is very attractive for the company.

"We've got a lot of people that need employment, an upgrade of employment. So we've been trying to encourage them to come back," said Gorman.

Little says he hopes Sykes does reopen and he has a chance of getting his old job back.

"It would bring more jobs. It would make them tickled to come back. It would make me happy," said Little.

Sykes officials plan to visit Hazard next week. If you're interested in a job with the company, there will be an open house at the Hampton Inn next Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 am to 8 pm.
