Cumberland Gap, Claiborne County (WVLT) - The bodies of two people are found behind the counter of a Claiborne County package store. Now, authorities are working to figure out what led to the deadly shooting.
The gruesome discovery was made just before 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning by the owner of the package store.
Police found the back door of the Tunnel II Package Store open and two bodies inside.
The package store is located on Highway 58 in the town of Cumberland Gap, just a mile or so from the Cumberland Gap Tunnel and within sight of the Kentucky line.
Police says the victims are a man and a woman who are employees at the Tunnel II Package Store in Cumberland Gap.
They say between 11:30 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. Wednesday the owner called 911, then located the local authorities who showed up on the scene, TBI and the Claiborne County Sheriff's Department have been investigating all through the morning.
Chief Ray with the Claiborne County Sheriff's Department could not comment on how the victims were killed he would also not say if it was an armed robbery or not. Authorities are still searching the area for any evidence.
"We're trying to comb every square inch of this parking lot, the exterior of the building, the interior of the building, for any evidence that might link us to the person that committed this crime."
The families of the victims have been notified, but authorities are not releasing any information until the bodies have officially been identified.
Still no arrests in a double murder at a liquor store just across the Kentucky border in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee.
Julie Maiden Kirby of Pineville and Ralph Hopper of Harrogate, Tennessee were found dead in the tunnel two way package store off highway 58.
Police say the two were shot after an armed robbery attempt.
Police ask anyone in Kentucky or Tennessee to call them if you saw anything unusual last night in the area.
