Police Continue Search For Sex Offenders In Violation Of New Law

Wednesday makes one week since a new law restricting where sex offenders can live went into affect, but police are still working on tracking down all the offenders not in compliance with the law.

Sex offenders were given a 90 day notice to move or face jail time. The Hazard Police Department has been taking what they call a proactive approach to making sure sex offenders do not live within one thousand feet of a school, playground, or daycare.

The Hazard Police Department has been checking the homes of every registered sex offender in Hazard to make sure they are not violating the law.

"So if they haven't moved, we're going to obtain a warrant for them and they will be lodged in the jail," Hazard Police Chief Ronnie Bryant said.

State police say with a much larger jurisdiction they are dealing with the new law based on calls from the public.

"Making sure any complaints that are coming in from the public are being checked into properly and also making sure all registered sex offenders are in compliance," Kentucky State Police Trooper Jody Sims said.

State police are reporting more than nine hundred registered sex offenders in Southeastern Kentucky. Morgan County has the highest number of sex offenders in our region, with 86. Second is Pike County with 70 and then Madison County with 60 registered sex offenders.

"If they aren't complying, they will," Bryant said.

As a mother, Monica Morton says she feels her family is now a little safer.

"Its more comfortable to know that they're not around as close as what they normally would be," Morton said.

First time offenders of the law will be charged with a misdemeanor, but every time after that its a felony offense. Law enforcement officials say if you think someone is in violation of the sex offender law to call your local police.
