Ceremony Honors Three Fallen Harlan County Firefighters

Three firefighters killed in the line of duty were honored Thursday and family and friends say better late than never. The three Harlan County firefighters died while fighting a forest fire more than 40 years ago.

Kenneth McKnight, Billy Lee Brock, and James Buck Shepard were honored Thursday by the Supporting Heroes’ organization.

Supporting Heroes wanted to hold the ceremony after they found out the men were not given a firefighter's ceremony back in 1965.

"I'm very happy. I think it’s wonderful that they were recognized after 41 years," said Irene Brock Kellerman, widow of Billy Lee Brock.

American flags and a plaque with the firefighter's prayer on it were presented to the three families.

The organization also donated a headstone to the Shepard family because the grave of James Buck Shepard has gone without one for all these years.
