A Southern Kentucky church needs help rebuilding after a fire last week.
For one hundred years, the First Church of Jesus Christ in Wibord has stood on a McCreary County hillside. For the last 50 years, it's been a church. Members have come and gone and in recent years, less than ten people gathered here to worship. But for people like Violet Boyatt, it's more than just a church.
"You know that's home to all of us. I remember as far back as a child, that's where I grew up in church," said Boyatt.
Members are saddened their little piece of history is gone, down but not defeated. They're going to rebuild, but they need money. A telethon will ask viewers of Cable Channel 2 to give.
"I hope they will dig deep and try to help us because if they were in our shoes, we would help them, too," Boyatt said.
Kentucky State Police have already ruled the cause of the fire as electrical, but church members say they can't believe that. They believe it was intentionally set.
"I think it was arson, that's my thinking. I think they should investigate to know if we've got someone brave enough to burn our church, they could burn others," Boyatt said.
Someone broke into the church three months ago and set a small fire then.
"I don't want them to investigate for us. It wouldn't do us any good. It's for the churches and others it would help," Boyatt said.
The telethon on MBR-TV Cable Channel 2 airs Saturday from 1 to 5.
Kentucky State Police was contacted several times to see if they are going to reopen their investigation, but no one was available to give us an answer.
