LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Senator Mitch McConnell offered a hand of friendship to majority Democrats today. He suggested a chance for accomplishments on such weighty issues as immigration and Social Security after he was elected as the top Senate Republican leader.
He also warned that Republicans will have a "robust" minority to block Democratic initiatives if Democrats are unwilling to cooperate.
G.O.P. colleagues unanimously selected McConnell today as their
minority leader in the next Congress.
McConnell says he will have as much influence as he's ever had on issues that relate to Kentucky.
McConnell met later with Senator Harry Reid of Nevada who will become Democratic majority leader.
