Whether it's a cough, sore throat, runny nose, or congestion, the winter cold season is upon us. Before you run to the pharmacy to load up on medication, there are some tips you should know about treating the common cold.
Doctor Ronald Collier says a cold is a virus and cannot be treated with medication, only rest and plenty of fluids will help. It can take days for a cold to run its course. In the meantime, he says cold medicine can help by treating the symptoms of the virus.
"If you have a sore throat and runny nose, get something that says for sore throat and runny nose. If you have a cough and sore throat, get something for that. In other words read on the bottle and get what it says the medication is for and you'll usually be all right," Dr. Collier said.
Doctor Collier says if you are taking prescription medication for another illness, always check with a pharmacist or your physician before taking any other medicine, even over the counter.
