Three New Skate Parks Will Be Built

Kids in Letcher County will soon have a new place to call their own.

He may look like your typical high school student, but Eli Gover and his friends are making an impact on the community. They say they are in the preliminary stages of bringing three skate parks to Letcher County.

"Eli and some other kids came up to me and said we don't have no where to skate. It's illegal in the city and they tell us to go somewhere else but we have no where to go," said Derek Barto with Letcher County Parks and Recreation.

Gover says he and his friends have to drive 30 minutes to Hindman to just to skate.

"It just seemed like it would be cool to have a place around here, a place for our own," Gover said.

Gover says the parks will be similar to the ones in Hindman, but these will be completely designed by kids.

"It's cool to be looked at like a part of the county, you know instead of just another kid," Gover said.

And these parks will not only provide kids with something to do, but also somewhere they can be proud of.

"I think they're going to take better care of it. We're not going to have any problems with vandalism," Barto said.

And Gover says skate parks are a great place for kids because they are free.

"You don't have to worry about having money or anything, you just go in there and have fun," he said.

Parks and Recreation officials say they hope to have all three skate parks designed and built by this spring.

Just this week, the Letcher County Fiscal Court agreed to pay 150 thousand dollars for the parks and parks officials say the rest of the money will come from grants.
