The former Johnson County finance director accused of stealing school money pleads not guilty on the same day more charges are issued.
Peggy Vanhoose pleaded not guilty to 26 counts of theft. She was indicted last month after accusations she put her son on the payroll while he was in jail and wrote him a paycheck every month. Friday more indictments came down. Vanhoose's former secretary, Shelby Jean Coleman, is now charged with 26 counts of theft, while Vanhoose has two more charges accusing her of giving herself too much sick pay.
"In regard to 100 percent payout that she received on sick days, that was an improper payout," said Commonwealth's Attorney Anna Melvin.
Both Vanhoose and Coleman will be back in court next month.
