Just a week before Christmas, an eastern Kentucky man has lost both his father an his home after a fire on Saturday.

WYMT's Julie Maloney was in Knott County with the man and his family Sunday afternoon.

It's been a difficult day for Leslie Cox and his family as they try to pick up the pieces left behind from a blaze that took their home, Christmas tree and gifts.

Cox says all those things can be replaced, but his father who was killed in the fire can't.

Normally, you would probably expect a mantle to be lined with lights and stockings this time of year.

But at this house they only have one remnant of Christmas left.

"Hadn't been gone 30 minutes. Came back and the house was burned," Cox said.

Leslie Cox says he left his house Saturday morning to go watch his grandson's basketball game.

"They called us over there and we came back," Cox saud.

What he came back to was a house torched inside, a melted Christmas tree., and the toughest news.

Leslie found out that his father was dead.

"It's just something we have to deal with," Cox said.

Police say two fire departments put the blaze out.

After that, they found the body of 79-year-old Odes Cox in the ruins.

"Going to miss him a lot. He was a humble man."

Leslie's father, Odes Cox, was handicapped and in the home by himself.

Police say they're still investigating how the fire started.

While Leslie and his family wait to find out exactly what happened, they're picking up the pieces.

"Trying to salvage what we can salvage."

Now that his father is gone, Leslie says he still has the photos and memories.

"Me and him sat and joked and drank coffee. Then we left."

Odes Cox leaves behind seven children and more than a dozen grandchildren.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated..
