LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Senator Mitch McConnell has reached the pinnacle of power among Senate Republicans. Meanwhile, a long-time political commentator from Louisville took his seat as the newest member of the state's delegation. Congress convened today with Democrats in charge.
The Kentucky delegation remains intact from last year's election with one exception. Democrat John Yarmuth claimed the Louisville-area 3rd District seat after defeating five-term Republican incumbent Anne Northup.
Yarmuth was among several dozen House freshmen being sworn in.
McConnell was assuming his new role as Senate minority leader.
McConnell talked during the days leading to the start of the new Congress about the opportunity for bipartisan cooperation on such thorny issues as Social Security, energy and immigration.
