FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Ernie Fletcher's only announced GOP opponent is expected to make his gubernatorial candidacy official on Friday, his campaign manager said.
Paducah businessman Billy Harper, Fletcher's former political ally, has previously announced his candidacy and has been running television ads for months. Harper will file the required paperwork to get on the May primary election ballot on Friday, said Stan Pulliam, Harper's campaign manager. His running mate will be Dick Wilson.
Harper is expected to file with the secretary of state's office in Frankfort at 9 a.m., Pulliam said. Harper will follow with a press conference to announce a new marketing campaign, Pulliam said.
Earlier this week, Harper filed his finance report with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, showing he had already spent nearly $2.5 million - mostly out of his own pocket - on his run for governor.
Harper has said that Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher is too politically weak to win a second term.
