Hospital doubles size of emergency room

One eastern Kentucky hospital has doubled the size of their emergency department to better handle patients.

The new unit opened at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Floyd County.

It has 13 treatment rooms, more trauma units, and a decontamination room and lab.

Officials say all of the rooms have the latest state of the art technology.

Doctors and nurses say the new ER will help them see patients more efficiently and believe it will improve quality care.

“It's going to be a big benefit to the community because they come down, can be seen quickly, get their tests done, find out a definitive diagnosis and let us be able to help them,” Hollis White said.

The hospital raised more than one and a half million dollars for the project.
