As the Mountain Classic rolls on, we continue to introduce you to some bright high school seniors.
Janice Vanourney says she'd like to be a sports writer, but no matter what she does, she says a military style of discipline keeps her focused.
North Laurel High School Senior Janice Vanourney is always on the move.
"I don't like to leave things unfinished and get things done in the correct way," Janice said.
It's a discipline she attributes to the junior ROTC.
"It's helped me in all my other activities like clubs and sports and stuff. It helps me be a better leader," Janice said.
Janice is in several academic organizations. She plays soccer and runs track and through junior ROTC she says she's grown to love community service. This past summer, she helped refuge children.
"We set up a day camp for them. That was really fun because a lot of them didn't know english. That was probably the most rewarding community service I've ever done," she said.
And she says that experience taught her a lesson about serving others.
"They just didn't have anything over there, so it's really helped me realize all that I have and I can help other people who don't have as much," she said.
Janice is eyeing a naval academy but is also thinking about going to U.K. and becoming a sports writer. Whatever she does, you can bet she'll complete what she sets out to do with a military like focus and determination.
