An Alabama man is still missing after he was last seen near a motel in Eastern Kentucky. Now police have charged the man's father in connection with several crimes in that same motel.
Family members say Matthew Dobbs, his wife, and father were on their way to Virginia when they got tired and got a motel room in Pikeville. They planned to leave after resting, but then Matthew disappeared.
"He never would have up and left," said Laci Dobbs.
Pikeville Police say the 19 year old was last seen at that Super 8 Motel. Officers say while they were looking for him, they had to arrest his father, David Dobbs, unrelated to Matthew's disappearance.
"Mr. Dobbs potentially endangered other individuals at the time. He attempted to set fire to a propane container, which contained propane at the time," said Sgt. Aaron Thompson with the Pikeville Police Department.
He has six charges from that incident including terroristic threatening and wanton endangerment. Daughter Laci Dobbs says her father told her he did it because Matthew was missing and he felt police weren't helping.
"He felt the only way to get attention, to say hey look, my son is missing because time was of the essence," Dobbs said.
David Dobbs is also charged with raping a 17 year old the day before. Laci Dobbs says those are untrue allegations and police say they're still investigating. At the same time, the search for Matthew continues.
Investigators have little clues what happened to Matthew, but they are looking everywhere for any sign of him including a creek that runs in front of the Super 8 and Days Inn Motels. Police don't know if foul play is involved.
"There is nothing at this point to indicate there is nothing more than he is missing," Thompson said.
But for his family, they just want him found.
