Believe it or not we're just a few months away from the deadline to file your income taxes. Many people seek help in doing the paperwork but some people may not be able to afford that.
That's why many counties are offering free tax preparation services. Starting Thursday IRS trained staff members at several county offices will be available to work with low-income workers to prepare and electronically file their taxes. Many people could be eligible for a tax refund worth hundreds of dollars.
Free tax preparation and help filing for the Earned Income Tax Credit are being offered to residents of Bell, Clay, Magoffin, Owsley, Perry, Pike, and Whitely counties this tax season. Beginning January 25, staff trained by the IRS will prepare and electronically file tax returns and review details of the Earned Income Tax Credit with taxpayers at locations in each county. Taxpayers who earned less than $36,348 last year may be eligible for a refund that is up to $4,500 larger if they claim this credit. Interested taxpayers should call to schedule an appointment.
