Drug Smuggling Plan Foiled

A plan to smuggle drugs into an Eastern Kentucky jail is foiled... but one suspect is still on the run.

Johnson County sheriff deputies say the plan involved four people.

One person already in jail asking for drugs, another person going to jail bringing drugs, and two others on the outside deputies say provided the drugs.

Brent Cantrell was just sentenced to serve 50 years in jail on meth charges, but Big Sandy Jail Employees say that didn't stop him.

System Administrator Rodney Patrick says he caught another inmate bringing in drugs for Cantrell.

"About two days before this inmate arrived, we got a tip that he was going to try and smuggle drugs inside this facility." says Cantrell.

Eugene Ward was going to jail for a 21 day sentence. Sheriff Deputies say Cantrell knew this and asked his friend Jeff Blair to get Ward to smuggle drugs inside for him.

Deputies say Blair's girlfriend, Rachel Martin, gave meth, pills, and marijuana to Eugene Ward who then hid them inside his body cavities.

"He was booked in and taken over and stripped search and we didn't find anything." says Cantrell. "He was acting very suspicious he had something on him."

Officials say they tried to X-ray Ward at the hospital, but he refused, so they put him in an isolation cell.

"Turn the water off and put a camera on him and then 27 hours later, the inmate started getting the drugs out of him." says Cantrell.

All four involved are charged with complicity to traffic drugs. Cantrell and Ward were already in jail. Officers arrested Rachel Martin, but Jeff Blair is still missing.

Sheriff deputies say they believe Jeff Blair is on meth, and say he could be unpredictable and possibly dangerous.

They ask anyone who sees or has information about him to call them immediately.
