A former Eastern Kentucky official is behind bars after he was arrested Friday in Clay County.
Daugh White was the mayor of Manchester for nearly 30 years. Friday he was arrested on federal charges.
The new mayor of Manchester, Carmen Lewis, says she wasn't surprised that former Manchester Mayor Doug White was arrested. She says that's because the FBI has been going through documents in city hall for the past several years.
Daugh White served as the mayor of Manchester from 1978 through 2006. Friday he was arrested on federal charges.
"I think there has been a lot of idle talk about it for awhile," Lewis said.
Lewis took over the mayor's office just over a month ago and she say's White's arrest doesn't really come as a surprise.
"The FBI has been in town for several years, that's no secret," Lewis said.
White is being held at the Laurel County Detention Center. He faces federal charges, but what he was arrested for isn't being released.
"Nobody knows exactly what's going on," Lewis said.
However, Lewis says she does know FBI officials have been searching through documents at city hall the few weeks she's been in office and several people in the community have been subpoenaed to testify.
"They are looking for people to be accountable for their actions and I'm assuming that's what is occurring," said City Planning Commission Member John Becknell.
"I try to think positive. I really think we can overcome the bad things that have happened the past few years. I think it's really looking up for us," Lewis said.
We spoke with several residents of Manchester Saturday afternoon. They wouldn't talk on camera, but they did say they were somewhat surprised to hear that White was arrested, but hopefully this will be a new beginning for the city.
