FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Republican gubernatorial hopeful Anne Northup has hired the former executive director of the state GOP as her campaign manager, a political adviser said Wednesday.
Michael Clingaman will replace Cam Savage who resigned, citing personal reasons, Northup adviser Ted Jackson said.
Northup, a former five-term congresswoman from Louisville, is challenging incumbent Gov. Ernie Fletcher in the May 22 Republican primary, which also includes Paducah businessman Billy Harper.
Jackson said Clingaman is well known with Republican officials across Kentucky. "He's a proven political operative, and we're very excited about this," he said.
Northup is focusing on expanding her name recognition beyond her Louisville base, and devoted much of her speech at last Saturday's Lincoln Day Dinner in Louisville to talking about her background and political philosophy to the more than 1,500 party faithful in attendance.
Jackson said that Savage's departure was based solely on personal reasons.
"He did a great job, and it's a loss for us," he said.
