Letcher County Newspaper Suing Hospital Publication

A Letcher County newspaper is suing a hospital publication in Pikeville saying the hospital's paper is misrepresenting itself.

The Pikeville Medical Leader expanded it's coverage to Letcher County last month as a non profit mailing, free to every resident. But owners of the Mountain Eagle newspaper say their new competition should not cheaper mailing and advertising rates.

Mountain Eagle Editor Ben Gish told the Lexington Herald Leader that the hospital newspaper took one of his biggest advertisers, Food City. U.S. Post Office officials say the Food City ads make the Medical Leader ineligible for non profit mailing rates. But Gish says he will not withdraw the lawsuit.

Pikeville Medical officials did not return phone calls to the Herald Leader.
