FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A bill approved today by a state Senate committee would block the University of Louisville from providing benefits to domestic partners.
The bill was a response to a decision by U-of-L trustees last year to allow domestic partners of school employees to buy health coverage through the school. It would applies to any public agency offering coverage under state health insurance plans.
University president James Ramsey told the Senate State and Local Government Committee that the university embraces diversity and tolerance.
Senator Vernie McGaha is the bill's lead sponsor. He says it's an extension of the state constitutional amendment that banned same-sex marriage.
