Harlan County Fire Department Fire Chief Dale W. Lewis, 51, of Loyall passed away Monday February 19, 2007 at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital from an apparent heart attack.
Mr. Lewis a lifelong resident of Harlan Co. was the Preparation Plant Operator at Great Western and New Horizons Coal Companies. He was currently a dozier operator for Nally & Hamilton.
Dale was well know throughout the county for his years of public service, he joined the Harlan County Rescue Squad in 1978 he rose through the ranks and became Captain in 1988 until stepping down a couple of years ago. He had served as chief of the Harlan County Fire Department since 1987. He was a former member of the Loyall Fire Department where he served six years as assistant Chief, former member of the Harlan Fire Department. He was the former Rescue Coordinator for the Harlan County Emergency Management/DES of Kentucky. He was the Health and Safety Coordinator for the Harlan County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
He was a certified Emergency Medical Technician and served as the Manger of Mountain EMS ambulance service from 1996 to 2003. He was had served as a Loyall City Councilman and was a T-Ball coach in Loyall for several years.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Lizzie Lewis; his aunt, Frances Middleton.
He is survived by Susie Lewis of Harlan; his three loving children, Stephen Lewis and wife Kathy of Corbin, Jennifer Lewis and Elizabeth Lewis of Harlan; two grandchildren, Jonathon Taylor and Sydney; father and mother-in-law, John and Ida Mae Lewis of Baxter; Sister-in-law, Rose Cohelia and husband Darrell of Harlan; niece, Katharine Cohelia of Harlan; his aunt, Cora Noe of Loyall; he also leaves a host of other relatives and many friends to mourn his passing.
Visitation will be Wednesday February 21, 2007 from 5 until 8 at Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.
Funeral services will follow at 8:00 pm at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Moore officiating.
Graveside services will be 11:00 am Thursday February 22, 2007 at the Resthaven Cemetery. A firefighter’s processional will begin at Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home at 10:00 am Thursday proceeding to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Adams, Danny Stanton, Hollace Wilson, Steve Barton, Jason Colinger, Mike Thomas and Allen Blanton.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Harlan County Rescue Squad and Harlan County Fire Department.
In lieu of flowers the family ask memorials be made to the Harlan County Humane Society in Lewis memory.
