A man is in the hospital who claims he was abused at a Letcher County rest home and now there's an investigation.

WYMT's Jenna Emenhiser spoke with the family of the alleged victim.

An incident at the Golden Years Rest Home in Jenkins allegedly turned violent when a resident, Buster Manning, allegedly struck an employee and that's when Manning's family say's he was beaten by three Golden Years employees.

Buster Manning's family says he suffers from mental retardation schizophrenia and is manic depressive.

“He carries on normal conversation it's just he has other problems in his mind,” Kim Crabtree, Manning’s sister said.

Manning's sisters say after a confrontation with a staff member at Golden Years Rest Home, he admitted to hitting an employee, but that's when they say the employees went too far.

“I think it if looked like it was going to get out of hand they should have called the cops immediately versus fighting him back,” Sara Bennett said.

Police did get involved later, “They advised me that the patient had fallen and hit his head against a filing cabinet,” Jenkins Police Chief Mike Dingus said.

Police say Manning told them he was slapped repeatedly in the face and hit with a rubber mallet.

“I called social services, referred the case to them and they are determining if the allegations can be substantiated at this time,” Chief Dingus said.

Dingus says this isn't the first allegation of abuse he's heard about from residents at Golden Years.

Just last month a resident went missing for nearly a week, only to be found dead along highway 119.

“I wish he was never placed there! It should have been shut down years ago. Something should have been done before now!” Crabtree said.

The Executive Director of the Golden Years Rest Home told me social services and other unnamed organizations are investigating the incident and he will not comment until their investigations are complete.
