High winds, warm temperatures, and low humidity conditions just right for dozens of forest fires across eastern Kentucky Wednesday.

Fire crews have been working since early Wednesday morning to put out a fire in Perry County that came close to some homes.

A fire that began in Krypton Tuesday night burned more than one-hundred acres and crews say they will be working until early Thursday morning to put it out.

Officials with the division of forestry say the fire was set on purpose.

While they say most arsonists aren't caught, the state is taking steps to put these criminals behind bars.

“By the time it gets burning out, we're probably looking at 200 acres,” Shelby Conway said

Forest Ranger Shelby Conway says the fire in Krypton was intentionally set late Tuesday night.

“More than likely it was probably set from an ATV,” Conway said.

Crews from the division of forestry and the Krypton Fire Department started battling this blaze early Wednesday morning.

They say it is now under control.

The flames got close to the home of Wilmore Johnson.

Johnson has lived in that house for thirty-five years.

With fire crews working hard all day to put these flames out, they say they haven't had time to think about who started the fire.

“If you're actively fighting a fire, you don't have time to look for clues and stuff,” Larry Lowe said.

Lowe says eighty-percent of forest fires are intentionally set and they're asking the state for help in catching arsonists.

“We're proposing law enforcement to actually have people...full time who won't fight the fire...they're going to come out and do arson investigation,” Lowe said.

For now, homeowner Wilmore Johnson says he will be keeping an eye on the blaze until he knows for sure his house is safe.

The division of forestry is asking homeowners to call them before starting brush or garbage fires.

Also, try to avoid starting any fire on a windy day.
