Knott Officials Say Water Supply Is Almost Back On Track

Knott County officials say they are almost back on track with their water supply, but they don't want bad weather to cause any more delays and Wednesday they implemented their own backup plan.

National Guardsmen have been in Knott County since water ran out.

They've been filtering a supply from a creek for nearly two weeks.

“Last time it rained we had to shut down for 24 hours because of the sediment in the water,” Sargeant 1st Class Mar Metcalfe said.

They don't want to shut down again because the main tank is already back up to 26 feet.

Emergency officials came up with a backup plan using kids swimming pools.

“We're expecting some rain here on Saturday and that's going to muddy the water so basically what we're going is setting up a sediment basin,” Metcalfe said.

“Basically, going from pool to pool until it should be clear enough until we can pump rain or shine,” Judge Executive Randy Thompson said.

Water pumped into the pools will be processed so all sediment drains to the bottom...

The pool system might even get them ahead of schedule and officials say the supply can't fill up fast enough.

“When we can get the tanks fulll, the 3 Hindman wells that are dry or depleting, it should give us a chance to test those wells and see what the problem is,” Judge Thompson said.

Thompson says the guardsmen will stay in Knott County for at least six more weeks and even though everyone should have running water in their homes, officials urge all residents to conserve.

Judge Executive Randy Thompson says these are only temporary solutions, but he says a long term solution is underway.

He says Knott County was just approved to begin construction on a water treatment plant and that's scheduled to be complete by September 2008.
