1 Million Dollar Lotto Ticket Sold In Harlan County

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The odds were much better than usual in the Kentucky Lottery's first raffle-style game - it had two million-dollar winners.

The winning tickets were sold in central Kentucky's Danville and in Baxter, a small eastern Kentucky town in Harlan County.

Rita Matherly of Perryville in Boyle County claimed one of the $1 million prizes. Matherly, who collects traffic ticket payments at Boyle District Court, said she and her husband, Billy, bought five $10 chances for the Million Dollar Draw.

"We're not very lucky, but I guess that's different now," Rita Matherly said.

The winner in Harlan County wanted to remain anonymous, Kentucky Lottery spokesman Chip Polston said.

The "Million Dollar Draw" game was touted as featuring the best odds ever offered by the Kentucky Lottery for winning $1 million. The odds of winning were 1 in 250,000.

The lottery sold 500,000 tickets between Jan. 1 and March 6, and Monday it drew 734 winning numbers at random, including the two $1 million winning tickets.

Prizes of $10,000 or more must be claimed at the lottery headquarters in downtown Louisville. Lesser prizes can be claimed at lottery retailers.

There were 30 winners of $10,000 and 700 prizes of $500. Of the $5 million in ticket sales, $2.75 million was being returned to players in prizes.

Officials were pleased with ticket sales and plan another raffle-style game this summer, Polston said.
