An Eastern Kentucky business owner is recovering after he was allegedly beaten and robbed. It happened in Jenkins in Letcher County and police are still looking for a suspect.
It was just after two Monday afternoon when Jenkins Police say a person walked into Whitaker's Music, went to the counter and asked for money. Police say when the store owner, 88 year old Ervin Whitaker, turned his back, the person hit him over the head several times.
Jenkins Police say many are in shock after a person walked into Whitaker's Music demanding money.
"It's pretty much outrage right now because everybody thinks why would you do this to a fella of his stature in the community," said Sgt. Jim Stephens with the Jenkins Police Department.
It happened during business hours, just after two Monday afternoon.
"The store owner said the individual asked him for some change. He turned his back and that's when the perpetrator struck him with some kind of object, knocked him down. He got some cuts on him," Sgt. Stephens said.
Stephens says before the store owner could get up, the suspect left the store.
"The individual took some cash out of the register and left," Stephens said.
Stephens says Whitaker's Music is a fixture in the Jenkins community.
"It's been here for years and years," Stephens said.
And it's rare that something like this happen here.
"It's made people more aware. They're more apt to notice what's going on. Hopefully it won't happen again," Stephens said.
Stephens says police haven't made any arrests.
We spoke with Whitaker Tuesday night. He didn't want to go on camera but says he has been released from the hospital and is doing alright. Jenkins Police say they have some leads and hope anyone with information will call them.
