UNDATED (AP) - Fines for violating federal mine safety laws are
The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration announced
today that it has finalized a rule that increases fines for all
Director Richard Stickler says the idea is to get mine operators
to prevent and correct violations.
The changes revise existing policy and implement changes
required by the Federal Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response
Act. The new safety law was prompted by West Virginia's Sago Mine
explosion in January 2006.
Penalties for all infractions will go up, with a maximum fine of
220-thousand dollars for flagrant violations that cause injury or
