Teens Pushing For Restaurant Smoking Ban

Last year, Pike County teens successfully banned smoking in the courthouse, and now they want the same thing to happen in restaurants.

The Pike County Youth Council wants to make all public eating places in Pike County smoke free. They're circulating petitions asking people to support banning smoking in restaurants. Their goal is 12,000 signatures. After that, they will take the petitions to the fiscal court, and the city commissions in Pikeville, Elkhorn City, and Coal Run and ask for an ordinance.

"It's one person's choice to smoke or not but to endanger the lives of others and the health of others inside a restaurant is our responsibility to get rid of," said Pike County Central Junior Tyson Mauk.

Students say they expect opposition, but they will not back down.
