One local hospital is sending newborn babies home with . . books to read.
Friends of the Laurel County library are now giving parents these reading packets as they leave Marymount Medical Center. They include very simple reading material . . but experts say it's never too early to get young children into the habit of reading.
"Learning to recognize what a book is . . how to open . . close a book . . . all of those things come from a parent modeling and teaching children to do that," says Vicki Lauderdale of Books for Babies "And we think it's extremely important to start very young."
Books for babies organizers say this year they expect to give packets to parents of about eight hundred newborns. They're paid for by book sales . . and donations to the laurel county public library.
