Police say he stole 14 vehicles in a matter of months.
It happened in Clay County and now Manchester Police say the man they arrested is a fugitive from another Kentucky county as well.
“I was just working Friday night, then after I went outside to take all the garbage out like I always do about 3 a.m. and I looked over and my car was gone and I was freaked out and didn't know what to do,” John R Naugle said.
John Naugle says he contacted police immediately only to find out his car wasn't the only one stolen in Clay County.
“Since mid March this department, along with the sheriff's department and KSP have investigated 14 auto thefts throughout the county and the city,” Assistant Chief Jeff Culver said.
Police say 29 year old Welzie Wagers would take the stolen vehicles to salvage yards and sell each vehicle for a couple hundred dollarsm but they say Wagers targeted certain types of cars made in the eighties and nineties.
“That he has the knowledge of breaking into them very easily,” Naugle said.
Naugle was one of a lucky few, Manchester Police called him Tuesday afternoon to say they found his vehicle before it was crushed at a salvage yard.
“We got 2 kids and I'm married and that was the only car we had,” Naugle said.
Police say Wagers began his car theft spree in Clay County after he fled Lexington.
Manchester Police say wagers will face his charges in Fayette County as well.
They say they it would have been harder to catch him if they didn't have the help they received from the public.
