Rescue crews finally reached a central Kentucky man, stranded in the Red River Gorge, late Thursday afternoon.
20-year-old Ben Simonson went for a hike Wednesday morning at around 11:00. Searchers located him in the overnight hours because he started a fire that was spotted from a helicopter.
Simonson was located about 60 feet below the nearest trail on a ledge. For a few hours, rescue crews were above and below him, but were unable to reach him because of the rugged terrain.
Powell County officials say Simonson was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and had only a bottle of water and a package of sunflower seeds with him went he set off on his hike.
Simonson did have his cell phone on him, which he used to call his mom to tell her he was lost.
Rescue crews say he stayed put, which is why they were able to find him so quickly.
Once crews reached him, he was able to walk out on his own. He is said to be doing well. He told us he was hungry and a little tired.
Simonson is a hotel worker in Winchester.
