Massey Energy Faces Potential Fines

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Massey Energy faces more potential
fines by federal regulators, this time for thousands of alleged
Clean Water Act violations.
Federal prosecutors in Charleston, West Virginia, have filed a
lawsuit against Massey and its subsidiaries. They say the coal
operations illegally poured pollutants into waterways in both West
Virginia and Kentucky more than 46-hundred times between 2000 and
2006.
Prosecutors count more than 69-thousand days worth of Clean
Water Act violations. They want a judge to fine seven Massey
subsidiaries between 27-thousand and 32-thousand dollars per day of
violation.
Massey officials did not immediately comment on the lawsuit
today.
