A candidate for lieutenant governor says it is time Kentucky stop apologizing for coal. State Senator Daniel Mongiardo says Kentucky is primed to lead the nation toward energy independence.
"We need to bring coal in to the 21st century. We do not need to be spending millions and billions of dollars of American money in the Middle East to people that hate us. We need to keep that money home. We need to become energy independent. Steve and I believe Kentucky should lead our nation in energy independence and we're going to be very very pro coal," Mongiardo said.
Mongiardo says he and Steve Beshear want to develop a two thousand mile interconnecting trail system in Eastern Kentucky for ATV's, horseback riding and bike trails.
The trails will use existing coal haul and logging roads to make the region an Adventure Tourism destination.
