Nine dead in one Eastern Kentucky county all while riding ATV's in the past few years. The top six counties for ATV deaths in the state are all in Southeastern Kentucky with Pike County at the top of the list.

Those numbers come from state police records from 2000 to 2007 and for three years in a row, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has ranked Kentucky number one in the nation.

Signs are posted at many trail sites like the Willie Begley Memorial Park in Leslie County giving ATV riders tips and a warning to ride at your own risk.

"Our local people feel real comfortable without a helmet. People that come in from out of state and stuff like that, most of them wear helmets," said Jimmy Sizemore, Leslie County Judge Executive.

Three people died in Pulaski County in the last seven years and Coroner Richard New says many times accidents happen when people don't know the area well enough where their riding.

"May receive a neck injury or chest injury where the ATV crushed them. Maybe a situation where they couldn't get the ATV off and they were by theirself," New said.

That's one reason why New says you should always ride with a partner or at least let someone know where you're going.

131 people have died on four-wheelers across the state since 2000, 47 of which have been from right here in the region and the six deadliest counties are in the mountains of East Kentucky. Pike County tops the list with nine, seven people died in Letcher, six in Harlan and five people died in each of Bell, Clay and Knox Counties.
