Steve Robertson Named Head of Republican Party

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Steve Robertson was selected as the chairman of the state Republican Party by the party's central committee on Saturday.

Robertson, commissioner of the Governor's Office for Local Development, will replace Gail Russell. Russell served on an interim basis after former chairman Darrell Brock stepped down earlier this year.

The committee unanimously approved Robertson, who was chosen by Gov. Ernie Fletcher to help lead the party as it gears up for the fall campaign. Robertson resigned from his post in the governor's office following his nomination.

Robertson was selected by Fletcher following a meeting with U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, said Marty Ryall, Fletcher's campaign manager.

"They were in total agreement," Ryall said. "The Governor and Senator McConnell agreed he'd make a great chairman and the board followed suit."

Robertson has served in various capacities within the party over the years, including stints as political director and organizational director.

Kentucky Democrats selected state treasurer Jonathan Miller as the party chairman on Thursday.
