Alcohol is sold for the first time in decades legally in one eastern Kentucky town.

Whitesburg is now wet after a vote easily passed in April for limited alcohol sales in restaurants.

The Las Penas Mexican restaurant made history by serving the first drink.

The Las Penas Mexican restaurant in Whitesburg is now stocked with much more than salsa.

“I actually had one of the first margarita's made in Letcher County. We're all just really excited about this for growth and development in our county,” Felicia Wright said.

It's history in the making for these drinks with a kick being served in this town for the first time in 60 years.

“I'm just happy that it passed and I assure the people in Whitesburg who are not particularly enthused about it, that it won't be the bug-a-boo that they thought it was,” Mayor James Wiley Craft said.

The vote passed overwhelmingly in April to allow limited, restaurant-only alcohol sales and owner Charles Colwell says he's prepared for the responsibility that comes with serving the drinks.

He owns another restaurant where alcohol is sold, and says he knows what he's in store for.

“We had a few problems when we first started with people ordering too many drinks and we just had to learn to say, that's enough,” Charles Colwell said.

Mayor Craft says 35 people from various restaurants were trained over the weekend to spot and handle any potential problems.

Four other restaurants have applied for a liquor license as well.

When approved, the Courthouse Cafe, Pizza Hut, the Starlight Café and the Pine Mountain Grill can serve alcohol too.
