Grandson says 1983 Pulaski murder victim was murdered in robbery

Andy Mercer says he knew there was something suspicious about Michael Abner on the day his grandmother, Maime Mercer, was strangled to death.

“That morning…I looked at him right in the eye and he held his head down. And I said to myself, there’s something wrong here,” said the murder victim’s grandson.

Little did he know then it would take almost 3 decades to make an arrest. And it’s even more troubling that Abner is actually accused of killing a total of 3 elderly people across those 27 years…Mercer, then Mae Stringer in 1988, and Jack Roerink this past Tuesday.

Mercer says he knows why his grandmother was murdered.

“It was robbery…money..the best we could tell,” he said.

Abner was just 19 when Mercer was killed.

“He had wanted to trade for an old car she had,” he said of how his grandmother and Abner knew each other.

Mercer says Abner exhibited strange behavior in the days after the murder. But no one.. not even police had the facts to connect him with the crime.

“Even at the funeral, people that didn’t know him said he looked out of place. He was the only person that looked out of place. There’s something wrong,” he said.
