Many areas across the bluegrass held community breakfasts this morning to honor the accomplishments and sacrifices Dr. King made throughout his life.

To some, Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of great integrity.

A breakfast was held Monday morning at HCTC. President Dr. Allen Goben says Martin Luther King is remembered as a great influential leader who helped bring equality to this nation.

“We have to have visionaries in this world to see beyond what other people are seeing,” Goben says. “To see beyond the barriers and break them down and Dr. King's legacy has done just that.”

“Addressing issues of poverty, discrimination by race and ethnicity and he was a very strong advocate for that,” NAACP Member Dr. Lyle Snider says.

HCTC’s director of cultural diversity says King's goal of racial equality and the end for violence is something to take pride in.

“We should use all that as role models for us to become better citizens and better people,” Elbert Hagan’s Says “We're all a part of this human family.”

“We often get buried under the mountain of daily life, the things that we work on everyday,” Goben says. “So at this holiday time, we pause to stop and remember and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King.”

Hagans remembers the speech he gave in Washington in 1963.

“He really means what he says,” Hagans says. “We will all be together as one family and I believe that as well.”

And Hagans says Dr. King's legacy will continue to live on for a very long time.
