Ongoing water problems in Knott County.

Some residents say they're fed up and they took their concerns to the city council in Hindman Monday night.

Some residents who get their water from the city of Hindman are desperate for a solution to their water problems.

Some say they have no water pressure at all or don't have enough to bathe their children.
These people went to a meeting and they wanted to know what can be done to help them.

Running water is a household amenity many people take for granted.

Connie Ramey and Loraine Wallen told city council members that too often, they've been without it.

“We have got right now social services coming and if our children is not bathed and took care of the way they think they ought to be took care of, it's our fault,” Connie Ramey said.

“We can take a shower and I can do a load of laundry and the dishes and that's about it. I have to buy my drinking water and I have to buy water to cook with,” Lorraine Wallen said.

A new water line could fix both women's problems.

Water Manager Jeff Kilgore says that the city of Hindman has had a ban on any new taps since December of 2006.

“The city just don't feel comfortable to add more customers without taking care of the customers we got now,” Kilgore said.

Kilgore says the goal is conservation in order to avoid another crisis like the one earlier this year, when National Guard troops had to come pump water for the county.

“As we progress and make improvements to our system tying the new wells in, see what type of production these wells are gonna give us, then we can add new customers,” Kilgore said.

Ramey and Wallen say if that doesn't happen soon, they may have to move to another county.

Water manager Kilgore explained that the city is working on three new wells to put in place in three separate phases.

He says the city has applied for a 100-thousand dollar grant to build the third well in phase three.
