Stores are packed with people getting necessities as this snow storm approaches

Consumers stepped up their shopping in May after tax rebate checks hit mailboxes, giving many of the nation's retailers stronger than expected sales for the month. Still, there were signs that many people are still focusing on necessities such as food and gas. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)

The upcoming snow storm has people leaving store shelves bare across the region. Many are stocking up on bread, milk and other items.

We talked to several people and they say you cannot be too prepared with a lot of snow expected.

From milk, to bread, to water. Store shelves are almost empty thanks to people preparing for this storm.

“Stuff to make soup, chili, and sandwiches and drinks a lot of comfort foods,” Pat Hollifield says.

“All the extra stuff I picked up was batteries and candles,” Wallace McIntyre says.

One person we talked to says he is hoping for the best, but planning for the worst.

“You never know, sometimes we may get an inch and we may get what's forecasted so we're just being prepared,” Shelby Conway says.

Some fear this could be worse than last month's snow storm when thousands of people lost power. Conway hopes that will not be the case.

“A lot of things in the refrigerator did spoil so sometimes you wonder if you're doing the right thing stocking up before the storm,” Conway says.

Conway says he has a generator in case the power goes out again.

“I’m stopping to buy gas on the way home for the generator so I’ll be ok,” Conway says.

And all agree it's better to be safe than sorry.

There is still some time to go out and grab supplies before this storm gets here.

People are encouraging others to get what you need because this storm may get ugly.
